Duke is an owner surrender to GRRNT. He is just settling into his foster home and we will know more about him soon.
Duke is the Golden Retriever dream. He loves people and is your best friend in very short order. He is by your side constantly, and has the wonderful habit of wanting to jump up in your lap and hug you, and lays his head against your chest, totally endearing.
Duke is not hyper by any stretch, but is an excitable young boy that needs some consistency in his life and to learn some boundaries. His foster dad is already making good progress teaching him routine and manners, and he is quick study. He has fallen easily in to the routine at the house, and joins his canine foster siblings in the evening for their final lap around the yard around 10:30, then sleeps well until 6 or 7 in the morning. He sleeps by the bed every night, and it would be easy to train him to stay off the bed or other furniture if that’s what his new family wants.
Duke was underweight when he initially came into GRRNT. He was not an enthusiastic eater at first but he has started eating more readily now, and he is already putting on a little weight with good food and regular meals. He may not have been offered chew bones or treats in the past, and he is just beginning to understand they are good things.
Foster dad is working on basic manners, like door training where the dogs wait at the front door before they can go into the yard, and Duke has picked up on that easily. He sits when asked to get his leash on, and then waits even after the door is open until foster dad says "lets go". He is very obedient at meal times, and will sit very quickly when asked to wait for his food to be put down. He already knows how to shake with both paws, and is such a smart boy he could learn a lot more fun tricks. He is also a great companion dog, and when foster dad is relaxing in the living room or working at the computer he lays down and will relax instead of constantly seeking attention.
Foster dad thinks Duke will thrive in a home with another dog or two for companionship. He is very affectionate with both the male and female dogs in his foster home. Duke has displayed a propensity to counter surf when he is not supervised, and he might be more inclined to do things like that if he is left entirely alone without any other dogs for company. Duke is playful, sweet, loving, smart, and would make a wonderful addition to anyone's family.
