Duke was picked up as a stray by local animal control. The shelter treated his very infected ears and asked GRRNT to help find him a new home. Duke is just settling into his foster home and we will know more about him soon.
Duke is a sweet boy who has lots of love to give to the lucky family who adopts him. Don’t let the white face & gray fool you. Duke is bubbling with energy, warm and friendly. His fur has been trimmed but will grow out into that long silky coat you expect on a golden. Light and graceful, going on walks are one of Duke’s favorite activities. You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen him jumping up and down while standing up on his hind legs.
Duke is well behaved but doesn’t seem to have a good grasp of common commands. He will come when called and has a strong understanding of “no.” Treats work well as a positive reward as does enthusiastic verbal praise supplemented by rubbing him. You will find him very eager to please. He loves being scratched, rubbed and petted. The antler and a stuffed animal are his favorite toys. He has shown interest a couple of times in climbing on the furniture which we don’t allow. The only exception is when it is thundering as he has thunder phobia. When it is thundering, he likes to lay quietly on the sofa next to you. He needs a little comforting during storms. Otherwise, Duke sleeps peacefully on his bed which is placed near his foster parent's bed.
Duke is great about letting you know when he needs to potty. When he becomes excited and in your face, you know it is time to go outside. Very short spurts in the backyard are fun for him. He has never wanted to spend longer than 15 min. in the yard by himself. When he was new in our household, he was a little shy and really appreciated having someone go outside with him. Waiting patiently, Duke is very good about letting you wipe the water & mud from his paws before entering the house. We even blew him dry one day after spending time in a soaking rain! He recently had a bath and was just fine with that too.
Curiosity runs strong in Duke. He likes to explore everything inside and out. He is even interested in the laser light toy we use with the cats, sometimes trying to catch the light. Our cats are his friends and family. When one has gone out, he searches the house looking for the missing kitty. If a cat runs into the house Duke will chase but is easily stopped by voice command. He’s just doing what dogs do--chasing running animals. Duke loves to travel and will make a great travel companion. His foster family took him to the Bluebonnet trails in Ennis and he loved every minute.
Duke will be happy in an fairly active family. He would do well with cats and other dogs in the household. He will enjoy daily walks and lots of attention from his forever family.
4/09/2018 Duke got the all clear from the vet today. His ear infections are gone and he is ready to find his forever home.
3/29/2018 Duke has developed some itchy feet with all the spring growth going on. We have started him in some medication to control the itching and he should feel better soon.
2/27/18 Duke came to GRRNT with serious ear infections, which the shelter had been treating. He had a recheck with the vet today, and we were disappointed to find out the infection has not cleared up yet. We are continuing treatment, but Duke will not be available for adoption until we can get the ear infection under control.
