Murphy was an owner surrender to GRRNT due to a change in his family's circumstances. We are just getting to know him, and will have more information about him soon.

PROFILE

Murphy is a strong, big, happy guy that is a little bit overweight. He is what we call a "Velcro dog". He wants to be where his people are all of the time and is attached at the hip with whichever human is home. He is the quintessential retriever. He will retrieve ANYTHING and bring it to you - newspaper, TV remote and of course toys! He brings something to members of his foster family every chance he gets. His foster family is working with him on substituting toys for anything that he should not be picking up.  He is a ball FREAK and can even put two tennis balls in his mouth at once.

Murphy was an only dog for the past few years, so he is learning to share with his canine foster brother and sister. This includes sharing humans as well as toys as he learns his place in his new foster pack. He is playing with his foster brother and sister more frequently, and their favorite game is to run and chase outside in the yard. He wants to be the top dog though, so if he has canine siblings in his forever home this should be noted. He would LOVE being an only dog.

We do not know how Murphy does with young kids.  We do know he does ok with his foster's 14 and 17 year old humans, and kids that age is probably best for him. He previously lived with two cats, so we know he can co-exist well with cats.

Murphy is neutered, housetrained and walks well on a leash. He's been getting two walks a day at his foster home to help trim him up a little bit. He LOVES his walks. We do not know yet how he does meeting other people or dogs while on a walk, however he did well with meeting others on a vet visit. He knows the commands, "Sit," "Down" (lay down) and "Stay", however, he is a little stubborn, gets a little excited and sometimes doesn't want to mind. A refresher obedience class would be beneficial. He is learning, "Back, Back", to keep his nose away during human meal times. Like any dog he is curious about what is on counters or tables, so his foster family has been reinforcing the “Back” and “Down” commands, so that he will go lie down away from the table while they eat. If he looks at you and sits automatically, it means he needs to go out to do his business.

Murphy is a little anxious and nervous while riding in the car. He is NOT a fan of the crate, and will bend the crate in efforts to get out. He has not been crated at his foster's house since the first week, and he has been well behaved when he is unattended, and he has not had any accidents in the house.  He loves the sofa and will try to get up on it when humans are not around. He would love to sleep in that fluffy, comfy looking, human bed too, if allowed.

Murphy is really a curious and smart guy. He is a love bug and will "hug" you by leaning into you. He was well taken care of by his previous owner, and came to GRRNT current on shots and heartworm medication. Murphy was a little sheltered, and needs a forever home that will help him explore the big world, and if he has canine siblings, learn to share his people and his toys. Given some time to settle into his new home, and some consistent rules, he will be a great companion for some lucky family.
