Picket attended the meet n greet adoption event on July 9. He met several potential adopters and currently has a family anxiously waiting to adopt him after he completes heartworm treatment.

Picket was an owner surrender to GRRNT. He is an active young dog, and will make a great companion for someone who wants to do a lot with their dog. Picket was diagnosed with heartworms, and he was recently neutered. He will be ready for adoption in a few months, after he has completed treatment for heartworms.

PROFILE

Pickett is a two-year-old male Golden Retriever who was surrendered by his owner to GRRNT.  He is happiest with his ball nearby and loves to be around people at all times. While he loves attention, he also knows how to play with his ball and toys by himself.

He gets along with children, and loves to be petted by everyone. He's a big baby who thinks he's a lap dog. He is also extremely smart and very curious, which means that his new owner will need to be vigilant about keeping people’s belongings, toys, and clothing out of reach.

Pickett gets along with cats but keep the kitty litter out of reach or he will try to grab a snack.  He does well on walks -- doesn’t go after other dogs but will try to chase any rabbits or squirrels he comes across. He will sleep in a crate but does not normally like going in there since he always wants to be with his people.  He will sometimes crawl in for a nap, though.

Pickett likes to be up with the chickens and will give one bark to let you know it’s time to roll!  He also barks once when he wants to come in the house.  Other than that, he is not a barker. He likes a leisurely breakfast but scarfs dinner down -- just one more quirk of his winning personality.

He knows the words out, no, ball, sit and is working on stay. He's very smart and definitely trainable as he learns easily and quickly. He's very sociable and needs/wants to be around people all the times. If you’re cooking in the kitchen, watching TV, or just walk to the bathroom, he will follow you everywhere you go. A true Velcro Golden.

UPDATE

7/11/2016

Picket started heartworm treatment this week. He will now need to spend the next month on restricted activity while the medication works to remove the heartworms from his system.  In a month from now, he will go back to the vet for the second treatment, and another month of restricted activity will follow.  Picket should be ready for adoption around the beginning of October.
