PROFILE

Harley was found as a stray by local animal control. He was recently neutered, and is settling into his foster home.

Harley is a compact boy who looks like he’ll be just a little smaller than average when he fills out. He has a deep gold coat, long and a bit thin at the moment, but that should improve with good nutrition. He is super skinny right now, but we expect him to start putting on a few pounds with regular meals. He is a voracious eater, and a bit of a messy drinker. He is rough when taking treats out of your hand, and will need to work on that habit.

He is an energetic fellow. He doesn’t walk, he bounces with Tigger style exuberance. He can be a bit headstrong. One evening when his foster family needed to be doing other things for a bit, and didn’t want him crashing the cone (post neuter) into the walls, cabinet and furniture, they used a baby gate to keep him in the office for a few minutes. He wanted to be where the people were, so he plowed down the baby gate (no small feat), and came and found them. When his foster dad ushered back into the room, he dug in his feet and protested the whole way back. He would like to have his own way.

Harley has clearly had some training. He responds to some of the normal cues. He’ll sit, but since we don’t know his name, you have to snap your fingers and say sit. But he clearly knows the cue. He’ll do ‘down’ if you snap and point at the floor. Not as readily as ‘sit’, but since we don’t know his name, and that’s usually an important part of the cue he might be quicker once he learns his new name. If you make him sit, he clearly knows ‘stay’ and will do it a bit. He’ll stay seated when asked to do so for a minute or two if you’re in the same room and there isn’t any distraction. If you get out of range he’ll come find you. The one gap in his training is that he is not good on a leash, and pulls quite a bit. He will bark in the house occasionally. Harley does have storm phobia, and will need a safe place and someone with him during thunderstorms.

We haven’t seen him around cats, so we don’t know how he would do in a home with them. He is very interested in the family dog, and really, really wants to sniff her. She wants nothing to do with him, and gives him a wide berth due to the cone he is wearing after his neuter surgery. He may be perfectly fine with other dogs, we will see once the cone can be removed.

Harley is affectionate, and wants to be a big lap dog. He loves people and loves attention. If you sit on the floor he’ll climb in your lap. He is very lovey and cuddly. He is loves belly rubs, and going on walks, and is curious about the world around him. Harley is ready to find his forever family to help him explore his world, and give him a lap to cuddle in.
